Jat See-yeu believed that to push creative boundaries, one must first study the calligraphy, morals, and temperament of past intellectuals. Such a notion was expressed in this work which carries the meaning ‘when you see someone of talent and virtue, think of becoming their equal’, an abstract from the chapter Li Ren of The Analects. On a cold winter night in 1996, Jat wrote this piece in one sitting using the remaining ink in his inkstone, imbuing each character with pictographic vibrancy. Created with dry ink, the work exudes the artist’s humility in learning from ancient sages.
