MAHJONG

This pattern is inspired by the “Mahjong Tile Making Technique”(麻雀牌製作技藝) which is on display in ICHO - Sam Tung Uk Museum, and listed on the Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage list. In the past, mahjong tiles were hand-carved, but in the 1980s, manual carving processes gradually gave way to machines, leading to the decline of this handicraft. The number of mahjong tile carving craftsmen in Hong Kong has dwindled, and now the very few still in business are artisans who are dedicated to preserve the art of hand-carved mahjong tiles.
