NEXT IN CHEONGSAM – YOUNG DESIGNER CHALLENGE 2022


For the 3nd consecutive year, SPARKLE x VTC’s HK Design Institute organize “Next In Cheongsam – Young Designer Challenge” (NICS) fashion design competition to promote the Intangible Cultural Heritage of cheongsam, and entice young fashion designers to incorporate east-meets-west design and Chinese chic elements into the art of making cheongsams.

This year theme surrounds the iconic HK Red-White-Blue element and the traditional Chinese Lucky Coin often patternized on old tile floors, gates, lai see packets and fung shui charms to symbolize prosperity and good fortune. Students must use the Chinese Lucky Coin cotton fabric and mix-n-match it with denim to create unique Cheongsam-and-Tang-jacket inspired futuristic street fashion that vibrates with youth and individuality.

| DESIGN REQUIREMENTS |

  1. The design must be Street Fashion incorporated with HK’s iconic Red-White-Blue and Chinese Lucky Coin elements, and should have a distinctive HK-Story element to it;
  2. The design must embody East-meets-West fashion aesthetics;
  3. The design must be comprised of more than 50% SPARKLE red-white-blue Chinese Lucky Coin cotton fabric and not more than 50% denim (in SPARKLE Chinese Lucky Coin pattern or solid color);
