Zhuangzi continues Lui Shou-kwan’s Zen-infused reimagination of the lotus flower. A splash of red rises from the ink in the form of a butterfly, alluding to the classic tale of Zhuang Zhou dreaming of being a butterfly, where one becomes free of preconceptions and transcends into union with nature. Here, the painting and the painter were unified as Zen paintings grew to be an inseparable part of Lui’s spiritual expression.
