STOREGATE

This funky design pays homage to the historic galvanized iron gates and resonates with the “Lion Rock Spirit”. In the “Below The Lion Rock” era, the familiar clanking of the galvanized iron gate of your neighborhood store was synonymous of the modest and hard-working HK people. Heard in the morning, it signaled the start of a new day; heard in the evening, it reminded us that the day’s work is over and it was time to go home and enjoy some treasured family time. No two store gates are alike as each is carved with the individual store’s name.

Over the past decade as corner stores are crushed under the wheel of time, the galvanized iron carved gate has become a memorabilia of the good ol’ days. Nowadays, besides being displayed in the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, old store gates can sometimes be found in hip retro vintage stores and coffee shops, and “Galvanized Iron Product Making Technique” has also been listed as an intangible cultural heritage by the Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage Office.
